Kani ISIK, PhD.

Kani ISIK was born in Manavgat, Antalya, Turkey in 1946. He graduated from Antalya High School (1962) and then Forestry Faculty of Istanbul University (1966).  He completed his PhD at the Graduate School of Natural Resources at the University of California in Berkeley, Ca., USA in 1974. Dr ISIK worked as teaching and research assistants at the same University during his graduate studies. He returned to Turkey in 1975 and started to work at the Biology Department of Hacettepe University, Beytepe-Ankara (1975-1979). He was appointed as Associate Professor at the Biology Department of Middle East Technical University in 1980. Dr ISIK was selected as a Fulbright Research Scholar by the USA-Turkey Cultural Exchange Program and worked on plant genetics and conservation biology at North Carolina State University (1984-1985) and then at the University of California at Berkeley (1985-1986). In 1986 he received Junior Scientist Achievement Award given by Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) given to prominent young scientists under the age of 40 years. Dr ISIK became a full Professor at the Middle East Technical University at the end of 1988. He has been the founder of Biology Department (1990) and also of AK-BIYOM (Biodiversity Research and Development Center) (1996) at Akdeniz University, Antalya. Dr ISIK was also awarded an Alexander von Humboldt Scholarships and worked in Germany for total of 24 months at various years (1992-1993, 1996, 2002-2003) to study genetic variation and selection of Picea abies (Norway spruce), a native tree species in Germany.

After serving as chairman of Biology Department for two terms, he was appointed as the Dean of Faculty of Sciences (formerly, Faculty of Arts and Sciences) of Akdeniz University (1998-2002). He also served, for eight years, as the Chair of Antalya Representative of OSYM of the Higher Educational Council in Ankara. He has been a voluntary lecturer for various environmental organizations including TEMA Foundation (Turkish Foundation for combating Soil Erosion, for Reforestation and Protection of Natural Habitats). He has written several books and many articles in his field, published both in national and international journals. He is married and has one child.
